Students from the Young Women's Leadership School along with their parents came together recently for a family workshop in the Bronx.  The purpose was to connect them with new technology to enhance their learning experience. The students and parents received a three-hour training seminar and got a chance to take home a free computer.

The summer heat didn't stop Bronx residents from joining in some community fun.  The Norwood section of the Bronx was transformed into a celebration of food, music and culture.  It was all part of International Family Day hosted by New York State Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj & New York City Councilman Andrew Cohen.  Families came together to enjoy an afternoon of fun featuring live musical performances, kids activities, food and more.  To check out upcoming events in the Bronx visit Assemblyman's Mark Gjonaj's Facebook page.

The Bay Ridge Library in Brooklyn welcomed the World Language Family Festival, a family-friendly celebration of Brooklyn's diversity and immigrant heritage. These events introduce music, dance, language, and culture from the many countries Brooklyn residents and their ancestors have come from.

A Freshman from Fordham Leadership Academy in the Bronx will be visiting Italy & Greece this summer after being chosen the winner of the Nat Geo Mundo World Explorer Contest. Neighborhood Journal's Shawna Ryan and Optimum Community were on hand to celebrate this remarkable young woman and her winning essay.

Knicks Clinic at Madison Square B&G Club

Enhancing their skills on the basketball court was just one of the things some Bronx kids learned at a recent clinic sponsored by Optimum Community and the New York Knicks. As Jeff Henig learned, the clinic not only brought out the best offensive and defensive moves the kids possess, but it also taught them how to be an on-camera reporter.

Charity Champions Grand Prize, Cardinal Hayes​ H.S.

Cardinal Hayes High School has won the grand prize for the NYC region of our Optimum Community Charity Champions competition. All school year the students have been collecting food cans and sending them to local food pantries in the South Bronx and the students were presented with a 5 thousand dollar check that will go towards their total fundraising efforts.

Prom Dress Giveaway, Brooklyn

NY State Senator Kevin Parker's 9th Annual Free Prom Dress event brought lots of smiles to Samuel J. Tilden H.S. in Brooklyn. In addition to over 300 free prom dresses, make-up and hairstyle experts were also there to help complete the look. The dresses go to young women graduating from high school this year, with support from Delta Rho Omega, Lydia's Closet and Macy's.

They came in all sizes. Fixed gear bikes, mountain bikes, folding bikes, tricycles, and bicycles built for two. Brooklyn residents came out to take part in the Bike The Branches event, to raise funds and show support for the Brooklyn Public Library.

Ariana Asarian is passionate about gymnastics and she was able to translate that love on paper when she chose to write about her idol, Olympic superstar Gabby Douglas, for Optimum Community's Black History Month Essay Contest. The Our Lady of Guadalupe 5th grader received the proverbial gold medal, the grand prize, in the contest's Elementary School category.

They may be from a high school in the Bronx, but these students have earned the title of Charity Champions for volunteering at an after-school program located in Westchester County. Organizers say the issues affecting the Hispanic/Latino community are the same as they are for all New Yorkers including the minimum wage, paid family leave and education.

A number of elected officials, including Senator Jesse Hamilton, came together to announce a new initiative to create funding for technology-based centers within public housing in the borough. The program would help youth and adults alike to be ahead of the curve when it comes to new technology and therefore open up opportunities in both the classroom and on the job hunt.

A-List celebrity actor John Leguizamo was ready for his close up at Celia Cruz High School in the Bronx to announce an exciting new contest from Optimum Community and National Geographic. The Nat Geo Mundo World Explorer Contest invites high school students both in the Bronx and Newark to apply for a full-scholarship summer travel experience with an emphasis on learning and enrichment. Students who apply could win the chance to travel to a destination of their choice around the world with a National Geographic guide.

NY Knicks Basketball Clinic, Manhattan

Optimum Community and the New York Knicks recently visited Alexander Humboldt P.S. 115 in Manhattan for a special basketball clinic. As Neighborhood Journal found out, the afternoon event taught the kids much more than athletic skills on the court. It showed them how they can succeed in life through hard work, perseverance and a belief in your goals.  Optimum Community also provided one lucky student the experience of being an on camera reporter.

A very special story has been told which depicts the partnership between a Jewish man's struggles to remove the barriers faced by African-Americans more than two hundred years ago. Neighborhood Journal attended the screening of Rosenwald, a film by Aviva Kempner, and the panel discussion among the Black, Jewish and Latino communities, which followed, as part of the Brooklyn Public Library's Black History Month celebration.

Charity Champions, Cardinal Hayes

Students at Cardinal Hayes High School chowed down during a pizza party that was all the more filling because it celebrated their work to raise food and funds for local food pantries.  Optimum Community's Charity Champions program encourages students in the tri-state to take part in local charities and these hungry students were awarded two checks!  $1,000 was given to the charity they volunteered with, The Sacred Heart Food Pantry, while a $500 check was given to the school itself.
