Hispanic State Parade of New Jersey

The highly anticipated and colorful, Hispanic American Heritage Statewide Parade of New Jersey celebrated its 41st anniversary with a parade held on October 2, 2016.  The parade route was along Bergenline Avenue, in Hudson County, and crossed the municipalities of North Bergen, Guttenberg, West New York and Union City.

55th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade

The streets of Newark were lined with thousands of people that gathered to watch and participate in the 55th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade of Newark, N.J. held Sunday, September 18, 2016. This year the parade was dedicated to Alzheimer's awareness and to the City of San Juan. The parade was attended by various dignitaries including U.S. Congressmen Luis Gutierrez (D-IL 4th District) and Albio Sires (D-NJ 8th District), U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and New Jersey Senators Stephen Sweeney (D) and Teresa Ruiz (D).

2016 Larry Doby Classic Newark Little League Championship

Named after American, professional baseball player in the Negro and Major Leagues, Larry Doby, the highly anticipated Larry Doby Classic Newark Little League 2016 Championship match featured teams, the North Newark Little league versus the North Ward Center. Leading up to this final game, eight city teams participated in the tournament held in Kasberger Field, a facility that was renovated in 2010 and has since served as the main site for Newark Little League baseball activity.

2016 Dia De Portugal

The sound of traditional Portuguese music and the mouthwatering smell of barbecue makes it easy to believe you've somehow made it to Lisbon or perhaps south to the small town of Albufeira on Portugal's Algarve coast. In fact, it's the annual transformation undergone by Newark, New Jersey, during the Portugal Day Festival. Portugal Day has been celebrated on June 10th in Portugal since 1933 when the government decided to honor the death of one of the country's great literary icons, Luís Vaz de Camões. The Portugal Day Festival in Newark, New Jersey was first organized by Bernardino Coutinho in 1980.

For the past 16 years, thousands of Cuban Americans have lined Bergenline Avenue in Hudson County for the annual Cuban Day Parade. The parade brings the culture and traditions of the island to a community that longs for the day when their homeland will be free from a Communist dictatorship.

The students have participated in Optimum Community's Charity Champions program for the past three years, and each year they have selected the soup kitchen as their chosen charity.

Bianca Lumang, a 4th grade student at Bayonne's All Saints Catholic Academy, is a finalist in Optimum Community's Black History Month Essay Contest. For her outstanding achievement in writing about Sojourner Truth, Bianca has been awarded an iPad mini and praise from her school and New Jersey Assemblywoman Angela McKnight.

Students at Eastside High School in Paterson volunteered to help "Man's Best Friend" and in doing so became Optimum Community Charity Champions for the second year in a row.  The students raised money and dedicated their personal time for the organization Puppies Behind Bars.

Cooler temperatures and an early prediction of snow didn't stop the Peninsula City from celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Thousands came out to celebrate the 35th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.  As the parade moved down Broadway, everything was green: clothing, hats, glasses, and even the beer.

Students at Memorial High School in West New York took a trip to our nation's capital for more than just a sightseeing tour. Thanks to Optimum Community's Student Lens Program, they got a chance to produce their own short form video project about Congressman Albio Sires, an elected official who represents their community.  After all of their hard work Optimum and the entire school gathered together for a special screening of their report.

Bergen County St. Patrick's Day Parade

Thousands of people clad in green sweaters, mustaches, oversized sunglasses, earrings, headbands and other knickknacks lined the sides of Washington Avenue to celebrate the 35th annual Bergen County St. Patrick's Day Parade. This year the council honored the 100th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, or the Easter Proclamation, by reading it in its entirety to a crowd of more than 1000 people before the parade began.

Newark St. Patrick's Day Parade

The Newark St. Patrick's Day Parade, the oldest such parade in the state, celebrates its 81th procession this year. The parade starts at 1 p.m. outside the Prudential Center at Mulberry Street. Then it moves down Mulberry Street towards Four Gateway Center and on to NJPAC, St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral, the Newark Museum and Washington Park.
