Stretching some 45 miles from South Oyster Bay to Moriches Bay, the Great South Bay has for generations made Long Island into one of the best places to live, work, and raise a family. And protecting the Great South Bay has never been more important.  For the 10th year in a row, Todd Brice and the Great South Bay Society has made it their mission, to do just that.

Plainedge High School students laced up their sneakers and put their best foot forward at their annual Relay for Life event to raise money for the American Cancer Association. The day is marked with lots of fun with games, food and music, but the meaning of the occasion is never lost on those who attend. Awareness and funds are raise to help find a cure and that's just one of the many reasons Plainedge High School was named one of Optimum Community's Charity Champions.

Charity Champions Grand Prize, Carle Place​ H.S.

Carle Place High School is the little school with a big heart. Though just a small school of about 400 students in a town of just 1 square mile, the high school students were able to raise 20 thousand dollars for the nonprofit Tuesday's Children to help those affected by the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. Their efforts have earned them the Optimum Community grand prize award for Nassau County and a check of 5 thousand dollars, to also go towards their total fundraising efforts.

Charity Champions, Bellport H.S.

Community Coverage - May 15, 2016

Charity Champions, Bellport H.S.

They ran their way straight to a grand prize award of $5,000! While at a 5K fundraising marathon they organized, the students at Bellport High School were named the Optimum Community Suffolk County regional Grand Prize winners for all their hard work to raise money and awareness for HELP Suffolk, which provides emergency shelter and other resources for homeless families. After holding an Awake-A-Thon that raised $3,500, the students then organized the Fun Run for those who wanted to put their athletic prowess to good use for the community. In total, the students have donated more than $10,000 to the HELP Suffolk cause.

C-SPAN StudentCam Honors, Huntington

It was literally a chance to get on board the road to the White House when C-SPAN brought their mobile press bus to the students at Huntington High School. The bus brought some education to those wanting to learn more about the 2016 presidential campaign, and was part of the ceremony to award one of the student's honorable mention in the C-SPAN StudentCam documentary film contest.

Race2Rebuild, Long Beach

Recovering from Super Storm Sandy is a long-term project.  That's why Race2Rebuild, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, organized a day of giving back, all in an effort to rebuild homes still damaged from the storm.  People from around the region took part in a fundraising 5K and 2-mile race and Optimum employees were on hand to volunteer their time on the beach and at the build site.  It's a day that keeps your heart pumping fast for all the right reasons.

Home is where the heart is, and thanks to students from Connetquot High School, another family will have a house to make their home. The Habitat for Humanity Club came out in full force to help the organization's Suffolk branch with much needed manpower to begin construction on a new home for a family in need in Bellport. It's one of the reasons why they have been named Optimum Community Charity Champions.

Optimum Community's cameras were rolling when Barack Obama Elementary School 4th grader Danna Morgan was honored for her prize winning essay as part of the Optimum Community Black History Month Essay Contest. A student who looks up to strong female leaders, Morgan chose President Obama's wife, First Lady Michelle Obama as the subject of her essay.

Favorite Poem Project, Huntington Station

It's poetry in motion! Students on Long Island joined fellow poetry lovers at the birthplace of poet Walt Whitman in Huntington Station to take part in the Favorite Poem Project. The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association hosted the event filled with poetry readings from various attendees including elected officials such as Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci as a way to keep the art of the written poem in everyone's hearts.

Black History Essay Contest, Massapequa

An East Lake Elementary School student is the first ever Grand prize winner in the Middle School category of Optimum Community's Black History Month Essay Contest. After receiving a total of 772 essays across the grades, 457 in the middle school category, Jacqueline Paduano came out on top in the school with the highest level of participation, with 94 essays from East Lake Elementary School alone.

2016 Robotics Competition, Uniondale

The FIRST Robotics competition invites budding scientists and engineers to build their own robots that can do battle and more than 50 high schools accepted the challenge at this year's regional competition at Hofstra University. One such team was Hicksville High School. Come follow the JBirds' journey from learning about this year's competition, to building the robot, and then putting it out on the field, all for a chance to represent Long Island at the National Competition in St. Louis. Will they leave victorious?

Charity Champions, Massapequa H.S.

Students at Massapequa High School have been riding the wave of charitable fundraising for Winthrop University Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids for several years, and the event has turned into a summer of fun! The Catch a Wave rock concert pairs two of the students' favorite things - summer beach festivities and music, to raise money for the center that helps those with pediatric cancer and rare blood disorders.
