The Leatherman Legend

Starting before the Civil War,  a man wearing a head-to-toe leather suit walked a 365-mile circuit between the Connecticut and Hudson rivers, sleeping in caves  and completing his journey every time in precisely 34 days. Historians don't know who he was, or why he lived as a solitary vagabond who rarely spoke, but the legend of the Old Leatherman still fascinates.

Anti-Bullying Walk, Poughkeepsie

The Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park is a linear walkway spanning the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland. At 212 feet tall and 1.28 miles long, it is the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world, and a perfect setting for fund and awareness raising events like the Dutchess County Mediation Center's 4th Annual Anti-Bullying Walkathon.

Sleepy Hollow High School's Interact Club is a rotary club group which actively participates in community fundraisers and one of those charity events is The Duck Derby, hosted at Tarrytown's Patriot Park.  Optimum Community rewarded the club for it's efforts and presented them with Charity Champions check of $500 and donated $1,000 to their charity: The Rotary Club of the Tarrytowns.

The Town of Wappinger is 65 miles from midtown Manhattan.  It's close enough for residents to commute to work in the Big Apple but far enough to attract New York City residents looking for a leafy alternative to big city living. The first European settlers were farmers and thanks to the Wappinger's agricultural heritage, residents are never far from a local farm stand or restaurant that features farm-to-table dining.

A major fundraiser took place in support of the 20th annual Dutchess County St. Patrick's Day Parade.  Volunteers, past parade grand marshals and supporters gathered for the annual Emerald Ball in Wappingers Falls. Radio Morning Host Joe Daily from Q92 Radio, a long time parade supporter, was presented with the grand marshal's sash and will lead the parade on March 7th.

Charity Champions Somers H.S.

An ongoing fund raising effort at Somers High School supports poor school children in La Carpio Costa Rica, a neighborhood of refugees from Nicaragua and other Central American countries. This January STAT, Students Taking Action Today, organized a fund raising hunger banquet. Some diners were served a nice meal, while others a scoop of white rice underscoring the poverty faced in La Carpio. STAT was presented with a donation from Optimum Community and is now a finalist for the Charity Champions Grand Prize of $5,000.

The Weather Channel Poster Contest, Felix Festa 

Middle school students from West Nyack combine imagination and artistic skills for an Optimum Community Weather Channel Poster Contest. Felix Fiesta Middle School 8th-grader Eric La was named the winner for his depiction of what our Hudson Valley weather will look like in the year 2040.

Holiday Toy Drive, White Plains

In White Plains the Coachman Family Center provides shelter for homeless families while the staff does all that it can to help them get back on their feet. There are a lot of children staying at the center at any given time so with the holiday season here, Optimum Community provided a donation so toys can be bought for the children.

Cablevision takes its Meet The Leaders program to Webutuck High School for a Veteran's Day Special Edition enabling students studying American History to speak directly with Veterans who have fought overseas in the defense of freedom. Cablevision also donated $2,500 to both America's VetDogs and American Legion Post 189 of Millerton for their ongoing support of wounded warriors.

Veteran's Appreciation Breakfast, Nyack

Over 200 Veterans attended this event at Nyack Seaport, organized for the third year in a row by New York State Senator David Carlucci. The guest of honor was WWII Veteran and New City resident Sydney Germansky, who distinguished himself while serving on an Army tugboat during the Normandy invasion.
